Information about Stammheim

Wappen Stammheim

Stammheim is the most Northern district of Stuttgart. First mentioned in 1181, in the church yard still lays the gravestones of those first Stammheim. The castle which the last knight of Stammheim had built, is a three-wing construction with a stair tower. The site belonged to a female baron, later to a merchant and a manufacturer. Today the castle serves as retirement home. Stammheim was suburbanised on 1st April 1942. It is, because of its convenient location and good traffic connections, a popular residential area for industry workers in Feuerbach, Zuffenhausen, Kornwestheim and Ludwigsburg. Agriculture, which used to be the main source of income, is today no longer relevant. Stammheim was in the news in the 80s due to the Baader-Meinhof court case, because of which the high security tract of the prison was built. Stammheim however has much more to offer than a well-known prison. An extensive restoration was developed for the city centre and bit by bit, attractive residential areas for families emerged. In Stammheim, over 20% of inhabitants are under 18 years old. Therefore Stammheim is one of the youngest districts in Stuttgart. Private links about Stammheim.
